Mirfield Canal Set for Major Upgrade as Part of Transpennine Route Improvement

Mirfield Canal Set for Major Upgrade as Part of Transpennine Route Improvement

The Mirfield Canal is set to receive a significant upgrade, thanks to the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) in collaboration with Kirklees Council and the Canal & River Trust. As part of TRU's 'First and Last Mile' initiative, which aims to enhance access to stations along the Manchester-to-York rail route, the canal towpath between Shepley Bridge Marina and Station Road will be revamped to improve pedestrian access and connectivity.

Enhancing Local Infrastructure

The upgrade of the canal towpath is a key part of TRU’s broader effort to create better links between local stations and the surrounding communities. The newly renovated towpath will provide safer, more accessible routes for pedestrians, making it easier for locals and visitors to navigate between Shepley Bridge Marina, Station Road, and the nearby railway station. In addition to the towpath, the programme will also include improvements to Mirfield Memorial Park, enhancing public spaces in the area.

Key Features of the Upgrade

  • Revamped Towpath: The canal towpath from Shepley Bridge Marina to Station Road will be upgraded to make it more pedestrian-friendly, promoting both recreational use and practical connectivity for residents.
  • Improved Accessibility: A new crossing point will be installed on Lowlands Road in partnership with Kirklees Council Highways, linking the footway network to the canal and making it easier for pedestrians to access the towpath safely.
  • Enhanced Green Spaces: Mirfield Memorial Park, a beloved local landmark, will also benefit from improvements as part of the upgrade, providing a more pleasant environment for the community.

The Transpennine Route Upgrade’s ‘First and Last Mile’ programme reflects a commitment to encouraging sustainable travel options by improving the infrastructure that connects public transport hubs with their surrounding areas. By making pedestrian access easier and more convenient, the project aims to reduce reliance on cars for short journeys to and from train stations, contributing to greener, healthier communities.

The Mirfield Canal upgrade is set to bring long-term benefits to the local area, enhancing both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of public spaces. By improving access to the canal towpath and surrounding infrastructure, the project supports the goals of sustainable transport, better connectivity, and more vibrant community spaces.
